PBS Fort Wayne is embarking on an exciting new chapter as an entrepreneurial media organization in partnership with the public and private sector to create media for the public good. We are looking for a mission-driven Senior Staff Accountant who can support the organization on its new path, manage existing systems, and help safeguard organizational sustainability.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/objective: The Senior Staff Accountant is primarily responsible for managing PBS Fort Wayne’s day-to-day accounting operations, including payroll, AP/AR, reconciliations, and financial reporting. This hands-on role prepares monthly statements for leadership and the Board of Directors, supports audits and compliance filings, and assists with budgeting and cash flow analysis. It is well-suited for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys both transactional accounting and contributing to the financial health of a mission-driven nonprofit. This role may also provide payroll, accounting, financial, and reporting support for another nonprofit corporation utilizing similar functions and processes.

Accounting Operations

  • Manage the corporation’s accounting system, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable/receivable, invoicing, and check processing.
  • Complete monthly bank reconciliations and bi-weekly payroll processing.
  • Assist with benefits administration and vendor oversight.
  • Provide accounting and financial reporting support to other PBS member stations.

 

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Prepare and present monthly financial reports to the Board of Directors and senior management, including Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow, and Cash Projections.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and update corporate underwriting workbooks annually.
  • Coordinate annual financial audits and prepare regulatory filings for local, state, and federal agencies, including CPB reporting, PCI compliance, DOT, and SAM.gov.

 

Budgeting & Analysis

  • Analyze financial data and develop recommendations on budgets, capital purchases, internal controls, and cash management.
  • Create financial models and “what-if” scenarios in Excel to support leadership decision-making.
  • Support strategic planning initiatives through financial analysis and scenario modeling.

 

Other Duties

  • Apply experience with media production accounting and job costing using Sage software.
  • Partner with leadership on HR-related functions and cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Four-year degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience.
  • Nonprofit or government accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with Sage50 Accounting or similar accounting software preferred.
  • Experience with reporting to a Board of Directors, regulatory authorities, and auditors.
  • Strong orientation to detail, accuracy, organization, and deadlines.
  • High ethical standards, trustworthiness, and discretion with knowledge of confidential information.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • The ability to contribute to a harmonious team spirit while maintaining professional objectivity.
  • Professional-level knowledge of MS Office products, specifically Excel.

 

Supervisory responsibilities

This position could have supervisory responsibilities, including managing outside vendors.

Work Environment

After a 60-day in-office probationary period, PBS Fort Wayne is open to the idea of hybrid work, depending on if it is mutually appropriate.

This is an in-office position, located at 2501 E Coliseum Blvd, Fort Wayne, IN 46805.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee must be able to sit for several hours and be able to lift up to 25lbs.

Travel Requirement

This role may also involve limited travel as needed to support another nonprofit corporation.
